After you know the difference between the Ro, UV, and UF Water Purification system, you can select the Best Water Purifier that is suitable for you.

Before you select any water purifier, you have to know the basic terminologies like TDS. In the previous post, I had covered about the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).

Reverse Osmosis Purifier (RO), Ultraviolet Rays Purifier (UV), Ultra Filtration (UF) are the three most important methods of purification technologies that are widely used in India and all of them have Pros and Cons as well.

RO Water Purifier (Reverse Osmosis)

The Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System or RO Water Filter Requires electricity to operate, and it can remove the Total Dissolved Solids that are present in the Water.

The RO Water Purifier also offers prefiltration in case you want to purify the Dirty Water, and the purifier removes all the virus and Germs, but it requires electricity to boost the pressure of the Tap Water.

Reverse Osmosis Requires a lot of Water, If you input 3 Liters of Water into an RO Purifier, you will Get 1 Litre of Pure Water and 2 Liters of Dirty Water.

You can make use of the Dirty Water for mopping the floor and cleaning the house.

The Domestic RO Purifiers that are available online are not capable of desalination which means they can’t convert the saline water to fresh water.

Thre are a lot of RO Water Purifiers Available online, But a Good RO filter comes with Energy Efficiency, and it will be compact and easy to operate.

UV Water Purifier (Ultraviolet Rays)

The UV Water Purifier also requires electricity to work, but it doesn’t need additional power to Boost the Tap Water Pressure. The UV Water Purifier can work with Normal Tap pressure.

The UV Water Purification system can kill all the Germs, bacteria and the Viruses present in the water but the dead bacteria will remain in the water.

The UV has proven to be a reliable and cost effective methods of water purification. The UV technology is chemical free, and it does not change the taste and the color of the water.

On the top of all these features, the UV systems are compact and can be easily maintained.

UF Water Purifier (Ultra Filtration)

The Ultra Filtration, which is termed as UF, is another water purification system that works without electricity and completely kills and removes all the Bacteria, Viruses and other microorganisms from the water.

Unlike the UV Water Purifier, the UF purifier removes all the germs and dead bacteria from the water after killing them.

The UF Water purifier doesn’t require electricity since it doesn’t require Tap water pressure and works well with the regular pipe water pressure.

The only lag about the UF water purifier is that it will not remove the Dissolved solids in the water. So, you can use the UF purifier only when you are sure about the Level of the Dissolved solids in the water.

If you don’t know about the TDS levels in the water, it is good to opt for a Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier.

The UF Water purifiers can work up to Ten Years and work well with Municipal Supplied Pipe and Tap Water. The Tap Water that you get via pipes from Municipal water supply doesn’t have problems with TDS, toxic chemicals and Arsenic and other metals.

You need an RO Water purification system when the Water contain a lot of Dissolved salts.

  1. If RO removes dissolved salts , and kill viruses and germs then with 300 above Tds we should use RO purifier
    Why there is a need for combination of RO +UV
    If RO works in both way so why we prefer combination could u please suggest there are lot of confusion

    • UV is just there for further protection or backup. The UV bulb doesn’t cost much and works for a long time. So, the water purifier brands install it to ensure the water is 99% free from contaminants.

    • UV water purifier is suitable for Low TDS water. If your water is salty or the TDS is high, you have to opt for RO water purifier.

I get municipal water supply and TDS recorded is between 100 to 110…Pls suggest which water filter do i need to install at home. we have a family of 4….Would just UV or UV+UF satisfy or RO+ UV is needed for 110 TDS..pls suggest the best and economical purifier based on the annual maintenance cost…

    • RO is not required for Low TDS. You can opt for UV + UF water purifier. Have a look at Kent Maxx, Pureit Marvella UV water purifiers. In case your shift from one place to other or your water source changes, It is better to opt for RO water purifier.

    I Manish lived in rohtak. I want to buy water purifier but I m liitle bit confused , can you help me regarding this.
    Water is having dust particles which get settled down and past few days taste and odour are unbearable.
    So , that’s why I planned which technology nd which brand purifier are best.

    Where you have given column wise differentiation above between Ro, Uv and UF purifiers, you have mentioned that NO electricity required for UF purifeirs.

    But below you have stated that UF purifiers works with electricity .
    Need clarification for the same.


    • Thanks for mentioning. It is my mistake. UF water purifiers don’t require electricity and suitable for Low TDS water.

  6. I am from Bangalore, We get Cauvery water and TDS level before filtering is 110-115, I have Aquagurd Total NF Reviva model water filter. TDS level comes around 32-38 after filter with RO, Can you please let me know if it is safe to drink and what should be minimum TDS level.Is it safe to drink bypassing RO ,Please let me know.

    • Rain Water is the purest form of the water, and the TDS levels for Rain Water will be around 30. For TDS levels around 100, RO is not required. But, if the water purifier comes with a TDS Controller, No minerals will be lost. I am not sure if the Model you have mentioned comes with a TDS controller.

  7. Water in the well is recharging with irrigation canal water. The water in well is used for drinking. So I want to know the good water purifier.

    • Well water might have high TDS levels. But, as you mentioned It is refilling with Irrigation canal water, you have to make sure the TDS levels in that water. If the water is Hard, you have to opt for an RO water purifier.

  8. Hi,
    Kent/Aquaguard which retain essential minerals does not pass all the water through the RO. So there is a possibility that some dissolved salts like Arsenic and lead will not get removed (From water flow diagram of instruction booklet). Any thoughts?

    • First, the raw water passes through the sediment filter, activated carbon filter and the to the RO. Once the water passes through the RO, it is also passed to the Ultrafiltration and Ultra violet radiation. Kent’s Mineral RO is certified by water quality association, USA, and the Bureau of Indian standards.

    • If you get Hard water, I suggest you buy an RO water purifier that comes with a TDS Controller. I have listed all the top models in this site. Please check them.

  10. What is the Difference Between TDS Remover and TDS Controller ? I could not understand which purifiers is best for home uses.

    • TDS remover removes all the salts present in the water which is not good. Some Minerals like Calcium and Magnesium are required in the water. On the other hand, Some of the top branded RO water purifiers come with a TDS controller or Mineral Guard that retains the natural minerals in the water and only hard metals will be removed.

    • RO is required to remove Hard metals, salts in the water. UV is for killing bacteria. UF membrane is required when there are a lot of suspended particles, dust in your water.

      Micro Filtration is also similar to Ultra Filtration except for the membrane size.

  12. I am trying to decide between Kent Maxx (UV + UF) and Kent Ultra (UV).

    I understand that Kent Ultra has a sediment filter and carbon filter in addition to the UV tube to take care of any dirt or impurities in water. In that case, is it still better to go for Kent Maxx at a higher cost or Kent Ultra would suffice.

    We live in Mumbai and get municipal water at home.

  13. I was told by a vendor that in an RO+UV purifier, the RO is used for 50-60% of the water being purified and the balance is purified through UV in parallel. This is done to ensure that TDS does go below 30 or so which can make the water taste extremely bitter. So basically what he said was that its not as if the water first gets filtered through RO and then through UV.
    Do you think that is correct?
    Have not really been able to find how a RO+UV works in terms of the purification steps.

    • RO and UV Purification technologies are entirely different.

      RO Uses very fine membranes to remove the dissolved particles from the water. Ro is capable of removing Hard metals like Arsenic and Lead from ground water.

      UV uses Ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses. If the water contains more dust particles, the UV rays are blocked by dust and not kill bacteria.

      Conventional RO water purifiers that are available in the local market (unbranded) remove all the minerals from the water.

      But, the RO water purifiers that I have mentioned comes with TDS controllers.

      The TDS controllers/modulators can retain the natural minerals present in water. So, the water is not only mineral rich but also taste good.

    RO+UF or RO+MF . I think UF is better than MF cause the pores are smaller.

    What do you think ?

    • Smaller the pores better will be the technology to remove dissolved particles. Kent RO + UV technology is an award winning technlogy. I have been using Kent Grand + in my home from the past year and have not faced any problems. The taste of the water is also good. But, i have to say that there is some water wastage. I am collecting all the drain water into a bucket and using it for cleaning purposes.
